Hard drive recovery: was technisch entscheidend ist
A hard drive consists of a motor, read/write assembly, magnetic platters, control electronics and connectors. For mechanical damage, clicking noises or impact damage, specialized handling is essential.
When analyzing surface damage, the first impression after opening is just as important as microscopic inspection of the read/write heads. Abrasion or scratch marks can indicate severe mechanical damage.
Service area, firmware and donor drives
The lowest magnetic platter often contains not only user data but also parts of the drive-internal firmware, the so-called service area. It contains important system modules such as defect lists, security information and head parameters.
Some modules are unique to a specific drive, while others can be matched with suitable donor drives. With certain manufacturers, spare-part compatibility can be critical.
